The state of the tour
The town of Uji is about 30 miles south of Downtown Kyoto. Our first stop in Uji is the World Heritage and Unesco Site, Byodo-in. Originally built in 988, it was originally a summer villa retreat for Fujiwara no Michinaga. Michinaga’s son converted the villa into a temple and constructed the Phoenix Hall in 1053. An image of the striking Phoenix Hall is featured on the back of the Japanese 10 yen coin. Short, guided tours are available. On the temple grounds is also the Hosho-kan Museum which the original temple bell and other historic items and a souvenir shop.
After visiting Byodo-in, stroll down the road which leads to Byodo-in and sample local teas and confections and shop for souvenirs.
After visiting Byodo-in, we travel to the tea fields in the beautiful mountain village of Wazuka. Uji is well know as one of the premier tea growing regions in Japan and teas produced here are among the most prestigious in all of Japan. Along the way, we will stop to admire the tea field views which offer excellent photo opportunities! Time-permitting, we will stop at the Wazuka Tea Café to sample and shop for local teas.
Next we travel to Nara, a city historically older that Kyoto. We arrive at Nara Park where you will notice a change from the relative quiet of Wazuka. Throngs of people are here to see the park, the Todai-ji Temple and, of course, the famous “bowing” Sika Deer.
For sale here are “shika senbei”, or deer rice crackers to feed the wild deer that roam freely on Nara Park’s grounds. Known for their bowing when wanting the rice crackers, you will have fun bowing back and feeding them. But beware as the deer, although very cute, are very persistent in their need to be fed.
It is also cute that deer’s ass looks like heart-shaped.
We will next walk to the Nandaimon Gate, a large gate that houses the Nio Guardian Kings, two fierce-looking statues. The gate as well as the statues have been dedicated as national treasures.
There are 18 large pillars reaching the attic, as many as 21 m, and the height of the gate is 25.5 m above the platform.
It is the largest gate in Japan suitable for the Great Buddha. The two images of the left and right are also very magnificent and there is a reamarkable feeling of history.
Beyond the gate lies Todai-ji’s main hall, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), the world’s largest wooden structure. This massive building is home to one of Japan’s largest bronze statues of Buddha (Daibutsu). At 15 meters in height and weighing approximately 500 tons, it is beyond description. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one must see it in person to appreciate its immense and powerful presence.
Under the large pillar there is a rectangular hole used to determine the direction of the pillar when building the Great Buddha building,
It is interesting to see how children are challenging from the story that “You can become happy by going through it”.
Time-permitting, we will take a short walk up the hill to Nigatsudo Hall where you will enjoy a beautiful view overlooking the city of Nara. When you come here in the evening, you can worship how the sun will set in the mountains visible over Nara city. It is fantastic to see the setting sunset and the lanterns lit up accordingly.
